Miss Hartsville Visits the Hartsville Farmers Market

Casey News

The Miss America Organization is the nation’s leading advocate for women’s education and the largest provider of scholarship assistance to young women in the country, awarding millions of dollars each year. This past February, Catherine Wong was crowned Miss Hartsville 2017 where she was given a $500 academic scholarship and the opportunity to represent Hartsville at the 81st Annual Miss South Carolina Pageant. Miss America contestants contribute thousands of hours of community service annually and have raised over $15 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals since 2007. CMN Hospitals are the official philanthropy of the Miss America Organization and contestants spend countless hours during their reign volunteering and raising money for this charity. So far this year, Catherine has raised $262.00 and is ambitious to raise even more!

The greatest part of being Miss Hartsville is spending time with the Hartsville community and raising awareness about her Miss America Platform: Bridging the Education Gap Within SC Public Schools. Catherine believes being Miss Hartsville, Miss South Carolina, or Miss America are more than just a title. This organization is a movement of empowering young women all over the state and country to achieve their dreams, make the world a better place, and do good by providing quality scholarship assistance and honoring their commitment to helping others.

Please join Miss Hartsville 2017 one last time before she leaves for the Miss South Carolina Competition, at the Hartsville Famers Market this Saturday from 9AM to 1PM as she raises money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals! She will be signing autographs, taking pictures, and collecting donations all day. Can’t come but still want to donate? Here’s your solution! Visit the link right here: Missamericaforkids.org/Donate/CatWong.

Come on by this Saturday and help make some miracles happen!

Downtown Gifts with Daditude

Roxane Debaty News, Promotion

There’s something unmistakable about a dad. Whether the one you call yours on Father’s Day is biological, adopted, or chosen, you likely know exactly what his favorite thing to do is or when his worst joke will come out. But for all the movie quotes you both know by heart, all the awkward family photos you’ve been in together, and all the embarrassing stories he tells at dinner parties…chances are you have no idea what to get him for Father’s Day. Like the rest of us.

Don’t worry, that’s where this Father’s Day Gift Guide comes in. Tell us where we could find your Dad on any given Saturday and we’ll tell you what Downtown Hartsville has to offer him.

If your Father is the wise head of the table that, on any given Saturday, can be found telling you what to read and “just finishing this spreadsheet” at the same time…

Indulge his sense of good-natured pride—stop by the masters of Chic Menswear, DeVane’s, to buy him special cuff links, an elegant tie, or (if you’re really in need of some brownie points), a blue suit for the meetings he needs to make a statement for.

  • Cufflinks at DeVane's
  • Trevor of Devane's Fashion
  • Jackets at DeVane's

He’s perhaps a coffee snob (no cream or sugar, you know the type), so peek into De Baz for a selection of fair-trade, pristine coffees from the finest coffee lands in the world.

  • Cashua Coffee

Then stop by Burry Bookstore, where the team there can help you find a book that Dad will grab his glasses to peruse approvingly on his next business trip—whether it be a historical fiction, a book on South Carolina’s agriculture, or the latest David Baldacci murder mystery.

If your Papa can be found strumming his guitar on the porch on a peaceful Saturday, humming…

One of the neatest gifts you can get him on the East coast is a hand-carved, hand-assembled guitar from Frets & Necks. The craftsmen there create these exquisite pieces by hand from piano wood and other sturdy, story-telling materials. They’re also doing a 15% promotion on all of their offerings—unique instruments, repairs on Dad’s own guitar, and lessons so you two can bond well past Father’s Day (just mention this blog post!).

After your sweet summer jam session on the porch, treat dad to a bourbon tasting at Retrofit, where he’ll fit right into the hipster vibe with a classy selection of fine bourbons and whiskies. And, depending on how hipster Dad thinks he is, grab him a pair of the most comfortable, en vogue sandals from the Hartsville Army-Navy store—but please, no socks.

If your Dad’s idea of a well-spent Saturday is outdoors, dirt under his nails, mulching…

No better place to start than at Gardner’s General Store, where the potted herbs and plants are sure to get his green thumb itching. They’ve got everything indoors to complete his gardening kit too, down to replenishment for the bird feeder, with some vestiges of gardening in the good ol’ days hanging from the ceiling.

Of course, he’ll need a hat if he’s outside all day (and what Dad doesn’t wear a hat?), so stop by the Hartsville Army-Navy store to choose from a selection of well-made toppers.

If he’s outdoorsy, chances are he has a beard (are we generalizing?), so check out Seersuckergypsy’s selection of locally made beard oils and accessories. And if he’d rather have someone else care for his manly scruff, you’re in luck: Hartsville’s most stylish barber, Brian at The Grooming Lounge, offers gift cards for its state of the art grooming services and, most recently, has expanded its services to offer facials…uh, excuse me, to offer longer grooming sessions that no one questions.

  • Items at Seersucker Gypsy

If your Pop is in football hibernation and can’t wait until his favorite Saturday rituals come back so he can sling himself into his favorite chair, cold beer in hand…

Make his Father’s Day tailgate-themed, so he makes it through the rough summer months before the blessed f-word is all he can say again. First, stop by Vintage and take-out a hand-selected six-pack of his favorites (mention this blog post for 20% off carry-out!). Next, head to Bizzell’s and put in an order with their delicious caterers, who will spoil him with southern classics.

If he doesn’t have one yet, grab a Ben-No-Mo from Seersuckergypsy so his cooler can stay off the muddy ground and closer to his hand.

Finally, give your dad an IOU for a Friday night at the sports bar so he can slowly emerge from his sports hibernation—luckily, we’ve got a great one in town at the LighterSide.

If your sweet Daddy is a classic Southern romantic, who still tears up at old love songs and gives the best bear hugs…

Give him a homegrown Father’s day, filled with the traditional kind of surprises. First, treat him to a brunch buffet on Mezzo Forte’s new outdoor patio—you’ll hit the southern classics and enjoy the music.

  • Sandwich at MezzoForte
  • Food at Mezzoforte

If he has served for his country, wrap him up some memorabilia from the Hartsville Army-Navy store, like a US Navy ball cap or a service award pin—it’s a small gift but a touching gesture that will make a big impact.

  • Pins and magnets at Hartsville Army-Navy
  • Items at Hartsville Army Navy

Stop by Gardner’s General Store to grab a fresh pound of butter and eggs, and when you get home, pull out his favorite dessert recipe. To keep the sweet surprise, whisk him and the family away to Sam Kendall’s for a delicious steak dinner before bringing him home to a house that smells of comfort.

No matter the Dad you are celebrating this June 18th, we’ve got so many ways for you to make him feel loved and appreciated. Our small town’s got a lot—and we will help your gift match his goofy, sappy, or just plain awkward Daditude.

Oh, Mama! Hartsville’s Guide to Gifting

Roxane Debaty Partner, Promotion

Likely, you are reading this post after having received several promotional emails from brands mass-advertising their Mother’s Day deals. Also likely, you have a mother who is unique, refined, and an all-around gem. What a coincidence: so is Hartsville! And your mother deserves a locally picked gift as unique as she is. With one week to go, we’ve made finding the perfect gift easy with this Gift-Giving Guide from Downtown Hartsville. No matter her personality, she’ll love the thoughtfulness, and you’ll get a fun afternoon in our adorable downtown. Who says you can’t have it all? (Probably Mom).

For the Globetrotting Mom who always has a story to tell…

You need exotic gifts that will make her dream of her next adventure. Head down to De Baz first, and pick up one of their carefully selected fair-trade jewelry pieces or handcrafted decorative items. With items from over 25 countries around the world, this eclectic store may even have a piece that will inspire your mom’s next adventure (and as her new favorite child, you’ll get to go!). Don’t forget to include the item’s tag with its story in the package. Next, mosey over to the The Mint Julep where you can pick up gourmet foodstuffs so your mom can host the next potluck and run through a slideshow of pictures from her travels. Package them in one of the store’s elegant serving dishes so she even has a centerpiece for the gathering.

For the Super-Mom who is always on the run, agenda in hand…

Blush: Merle Norman

You need a “Treat Yo Self” kind of day to stop her clock and relax her. First things first: head to blush: A Merle Norman Studio to assemble a pampering basket for her with the latest Merle Norman beauty products, or grab her a gift-card for a soothing facial.

If a blow-out and the latest Opi color are more her style, head to Indigo Salon & Day Spa for their Mother’s Day gift certificate special: spend $50 on a gift certificate and get $10. For a relaxing spa day she can have at home, place a few of Crema Coffee owner Tiffany Moan’s homemade bath bombs from her brand, Super Natural Body Care in a basket: they’re buy 3, get one free. What, she’s already a regular at the spa? Then indulge her with a double-date to Spa Soleil, picking from such delicacies as a European facial ($65), a blossom ritual ($100–please report back with what this entails), or simply a 1-hr professional massage ($60).

Spa Soleil

And for a longer-term gift of relaxation, check out Girls University‘s Mother’s Day special: 50% off 8 weeks of summer camp at Coker College, to benefit from several days of peace and quiet! Be careful–she might like it.

For the Foodie Mom whose hands are always floury…

Show her the best of Downtown’s palette by taking her on a Treasure Hunt of Flavors. Start by treating her to brunch at Bizzell’s for their famed Mother’s Day Sunday Buffet, featuring such Southern staples as beef tips with mushroom gravy, shrimp & grits, and deviled eggs.

Bizzell’s

If a dinner outfits your agenda better, but thinking of Hartsville’s Sunday hours makes you gloomy, don’t despair: our new foodie neighbor, Sam Kendall’s, is open from noon until 9pm on Mother’s Day (yes, that includes the bar). The Lighter Side will also be featuring a dinner special, where Mom can get free soup and salad bar with her meal. And since you’ve been planning this Mother’s Day for weeks (right?), you can shuttle her home to a delicious layered cake ordered from SugaRush. Psst…order before Wednesday, May 10th for a Saturday pick-up.

For the Mom who is always Best Dressed and the best shopping Wing-Woman…

Take her on a shopping adventure, or take yourself on one and bring her home the gifts to unwrap and clothe her head-to-toe. If classic elegance is her style, DeVane’s, a family-owned business, will offer you an array of outfits for her. If she’s an easy, breezy, beautiful lady who comes alive with the warm weather and nonchalance of summer days, cross over to COAST on Carolina, where their casual chic style will bring out her vibe. Now, for the shoes…you have two wonderful options. Head to Rambo’s Shoes for the Mother who prioritizes sleek fashion or chic comfort; and for the Mother whose style screams creativity, check out the selection at Brandi’s on College.

Rambo’s Shoes

Because shopping is a marathon—not a sprint—take a breather at Crema Coffee with one of their honey cinnamon lattes before heading down to Minnie’s Giftique for their adorable outfits, purses, and shoes (below).

Minnie’s Giftique

Finally, check out our newest neighbors, Mahala Reese, for timeless pieces made for women of all ages (below).

Mahala Reese

Don’t have time for all that shopping? Just stop by Main Street Hartsville and grab her a gift certificate, signed by you and redeemable for any day of the year, anywhere in Downtown.

For the Party Planner Mom who is always hosting the liveliest gatherings…

Turn the tables on her and host a celebration for HER this Mother’s Day. Take a page from her (likely very organized) book and stop by Tin Can in Burry Bookstore to pick up elegant stationary or boxed notecards (20% off!) for your party-planning to-do list. Next, head to Retrofit Sip-N-Seat—no, not to sample their delicious lemon sorbet and tequila refreshers, but to grab a set of these gorgeous gold-etched serving plates (below) for her always-set dining room table.

Retrofit Sip-n-Seat

Finally, go to Raised Down South to grab her a floral dress like this one (below) that will match her personality.

Raised Down South

And if she’s a Supper Club host, ease her load at the next gathering by ordering a delivery of chocolate-covered strawberries from Crema Coffee (6 for $14 or 12 for $24). You’ll be her second-in-command in no-time.

For the I’ll-Move-Wherever-You-Move Mom who has a picture of you and your siblings for every year of your lives…

Nothing makes her happier than boasting about her family, so stop by Madison Avenue to grab her a pair of stackable rings with each child’s birthstone for an elegant reminder that you love her (above).

Then, head over to local, hand-made SeersuckerGypsy where she can get one of your father or brother’s neckties made into a vintage-chic cloth bauble necklace by a local artist. Finally, stop by Midnight Rooster this week to grab one of their strawberry cakes with pistachio buttercream icing (below) to crown off a nice family dinner honoring the lady who stitches it together.

Midnight Rooster

There you have it, folks! No matter the personality of the dear Mother you call yours, Downtown Hartsville’s got a gift idea for you. Grab your Guide and head out there: it’s your day to become the favorite child once and for all. Happy shopping!
